How many steps does the calculator have?

The business valuation calculator is built as a simple 4-step wizard. Each step is focused, straightforward, and designed to take no more than a minute or two to complete. Most business owners finish the entire calculator in under 5 minutes.

The wizard is designed this way intentionally — rather than hitting you with one long overwhelming form, it breaks the process into logical sections so you always know where you are and what comes next. You can move forward and backward between steps at any time without losing your answers.

Here is exactly what to expect at each step:

Step 1 — Business Basics
This step gathers general information about your business to establish context for the valuation. You will be asked about:

  • Your industry — selected from a dropdown of 50 industry categories. Choose the one that most closely matches your primary business activity
  • Years in business — how long your business has been operating. Longer operating history generally signals stability and lower risk to buyers
  • Number of employees — gives context to the size and complexity of your operation
  • General business overview — a few basic questions about how the business operates day to day

This step has no financial questions — it is purely about your business profile. If you are just getting started and feeling uncertain, this step will ease you in gently.

Step 2 — Financial Information
This is the most important step in the calculator. Your financial inputs are what drive your valuation estimate, so take a moment to gather your numbers before completing this section. You will be asked about:

  • Annual revenue — your total sales or income over the last 12 months
  • Net profit — what is left after all business expenses are paid
  • Owner compensation — your salary, draw, or total personal earnings from the business
  • Personal expenses run through the business — things like a vehicle, phone, or travel that are paid by the business but benefit you personally

These figures are combined to calculate your Seller’s Discretionary Earnings (SDE) or EBITDA — the primary basis for most business valuations. Do not worry if you do not know the exact terms — just enter the numbers you know and the calculator handles the rest.

Step 3 — Business Details
This step captures additional factors that influence how buyers perceive the value of your business beyond the financial numbers. You will be asked about:

  • Business assets — equipment, vehicles, inventory, real estate, or other tangible assets owned by the business
  • Revenue trend — whether your business is growing, holding steady, or declining year over year
  • Owner involvement — how many hours per week you personally work in the business. Businesses that operate independently of the owner command higher valuations
  • Customer concentration — whether your revenue is spread across many customers or heavily dependent on a small number
  • Growth factors — any contracts, recurring revenue, proprietary systems, or other elements that make the business more attractive to buyers

These details help the calculator apply the most accurate industry multiplier to your situation and give you a more realistic valuation range.

Step 4 — Your Results
This is the step you have been working toward. Once you complete Steps 1 through 3 your valuation estimate is calculated and displayed immediately. Your results screen includes:

  • Your estimated business value range — a low, mid, and high estimate based on your inputs and industry benchmarks
  • The valuation methodology used — which of the five methods (SDE, EBITDA, Capitalization of Earnings, Times Revenue, or DCF) was applied and why
  • A breakdown of how your inputs influenced the result — so you understand exactly what is driving your number
  • Value improvement suggestions — specific areas where changes to your business could increase your valuation
  • Next step options — download your PDF report, email your results, share a link, or request a free consultation

Can I go back and change my answers?
Yes. At any point during the wizard you can click back to a previous step and update your answers. Your results will recalculate automatically when you return to Step 4. Many business owners run through the calculator multiple times using different figures to explore best-case and worst-case scenarios.

What if I get interrupted mid-way through?
If you close the browser or navigate away before completing all four steps the calculator may save your partial progress depending on your browser settings. To be safe, try to complete all four steps in one sitting — it only takes a few minutes from start to finish.
